The thing about Black history is that the truth is so much more complex than anything you could make up’

About The Project

Launched in July 2022 by the North West Migrants Forum and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Our mission is to promote racial equality and challenge racism by uncovering and celebrating the often-overlooked contributions of Black communities in Northern Ireland.

our vision

We envision a more inclusive and equitable society in Northern Ireland—one that acknowledges and celebrates the heritage of Black and minoritised communities as an essential part of its cultural fabric. By highlighting these underrepresented stories, we aim to challenge dominant narratives and expand public understanding of our shared history.

the travelling exhibition

At the heart of the Black Heritage in NI: Hidden History Project is a travelling exhibition — a dynamic, evolving exploration of Black heritage across Northern Ireland. Through powerful stories, artefacts and lived experiences, this exhibition sheds light on underrepresented histories and celebrates the contributions of Black individuals and communities. The exhibition is currently on display in Shantallow Library where it will remain until September 31. A full list of dates and locations can be found at the bottom of this page.

Meanwhile we are urging the public to celebrate Northern Ireland’s inspirational Black people by putting them forward for inclusion in our next exhibition. From community heroes to family members to those doing brilliant work in their respective professional fields, we are keen to hear about those helping shape modern society. If you know someone you feel fits the criteria, tell us about them here: https://bit.ly/NIstories
